About Sarasota Jungle Gardens
Step into a place where Florida’s natural beauty, rich history, and unforgettable wildlife experiences come together.
Family-owned and operated since 1939, Sarasota Jungle Gardens is one of Florida’s oldest continuously operating attractions—cherished by generations and thoughtfully evolving for today’s guests. Rooted in a deep commitment to community, conservation, and connection, we bring big dreams to life every day for our local neighbors, visitors from across the country and around the world, and the dedicated team who make it all possible.
Here, nature isn’t behind glass—it’s right beside you.
We invite guests of all ages to slow down and experience something real: meaningful, up-close encounters with animals in a lush, tropical setting. Across 10 acres of winding jungle trails, you’ll discover more than 200 native and exotic animals—from vibrant parrots and majestic birds of prey to playful primates, fascinating reptiles, and many rescued or donated species that now call the Gardens home.
At the heart of it all are our iconic flamingos—elegant, curious, and anything but shy. These world-famous residents often stroll freely among guests, creating spontaneous, magical moments you won’t find anywhere else. Whether you’re hand-feeding them, watching them splash and strut, or witnessing a child’s first awe-filled encounter, these experiences become lasting memories.
Throughout the day, engaging bird and reptile shows blend education with entertainment, offering insights into the animals and the importance of conservation. After each show, guests can connect further through questions and interactive opportunities—one of the many reasons families return year after year.
For our youngest visitors, simple joys become treasured traditions: feeding koi fish, exploring the playground, or climbing aboard the beloved wooden “choo choo” train for a bit of nostalgic fun.
Our mission is simple yet meaningful: to educate and inspire through interactive experiences with animals and nature, all supported by exceptional, heartfelt hospitality.
Whether you’re visiting for the first time or continuing a family tradition, Sarasota Jungle Gardens offers a uniquely authentic glimpse into “Old Florida”—reimagined for today, and unforgettable for tomorrow.
History
A visit to Sarasota Jungle Gardens is more than a day out—it’s a step into 87 years of living Florida history.
Founded in the early 1930s, the Gardens began as the vision of newspaperman David Breed Lindsay, who saw potential in 10 acres of untouched subtropical land just west of U.S. 41. Together with his neighbor, horticulturist Pearson Conrad, that vision quickly expanded into a carefully designed botanical sanctuary—complete with winding streams, serene lakes, and a vibrant collection of plant life sourced from around the world.
Over time, thousands of tropical plants, trees, and flowers were thoughtfully introduced, each selected to thrive alongside Florida’s native landscape. Today, guests can still experience that legacy firsthand among towering Royal Palms, striking Strangler Figs, rare Bunya Bunya trees, and one of the largest Norfolk Island pines in the state—all contributing to the Gardens’ lush, immersive environment.
By 1936, the beauty of the Gardens was already drawing visitors, and on New Year’s Eve 1939, Sarasota Jungle Gardens ოფიციally opened as a public attraction. What began as a botanical dream soon became a cherished destination for generations of families, locals, and travelers alike.
Now officially recognized as a historic site, the Gardens continues to hold a special place in the region’s cultural heritage. In honor of its lasting impact, Liz Alpert, Sarasota’s Mayor, proclaimed March 5, 2024 as Sarasota Jungle Gardens Day—a meaningful tribute to nearly nine decades of community connection, conservation, and education.
Since 1971, the Gardens has been lovingly guided by the Allyn-Lavick family. Today, we proudly honor the legacy of Dorothy Allyn-Lavick, whose passion and dedication helped shape the Gardens into what it is today—an enduring experience rooted in care, curiosity, and connection.
History lives throughout the property in both expected and surprising ways. The Flamingo Café was once a private residence, and the nearby koi pond originally served as a swimming pool connected to the estate. In the 1970s, the Gardens introduced its first Exotic Bird Show—an experience that continues to delight guests today, now featuring remarkable avian ambassadors, including some birds that have lived more than 90 years.
Over the decades, Sarasota Jungle Gardens has evolved into one of the region’s most unique and beloved attractions—appearing in children’s books, fashion photography, documentaries, and television features. Its reach extends far beyond its gates through community programs in schools, nursing homes, and special events.
For 87 years, Sarasota Jungle Gardens has created lasting memories for millions.
And today, that story continues—welcoming new generations to explore, connect, and become part of something truly timeless.
